Description

Traditional Hot Cross Buns are a beloved Easter treat that fill your home with warm, inviting aromas. These soft, spice-infused buns, studded with plump raisins and topped with a sweet glaze, create cherished memories as they bring families together.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm milk (110°F)
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp nutmeg
  • ½ cup raisins or currants (soaked in warm water)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup icing sugar (for glaze)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Warm milk to lukewarm temperature and combine it with yeast and sugar in a bowl; let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, mix flour, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Create a well in the center; add the yeast mixture, softened butter, and eggs. Stir until combined.
  3. Knead on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place dough in a greased bowl; cover with a damp cloth and let it rise in a warm spot for about an hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Gently fold in soaked raisins or currants into the dough.
  6. Divide dough into about 12 equal portions; shape into buns and place on a lined baking tray close together.
  7. Mix flour with water to create a paste for crosses; pipe over buns before baking at 375°F (190°C) for about 20 minutes until golden brown.
  8. For glaze: mix icing sugar with vanilla extract and enough milk to achieve desired consistency; drizzle over cooled buns.
