Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm milk (110°F)
- ¼ cup sugar
- ¼ cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- ½ tsp nutmeg
- ½ cup raisins or currants (soaked in warm water)
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup icing sugar (for glaze)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
- Warm milk to lukewarm temperature and combine it with yeast and sugar in a bowl; let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
- In a large bowl, mix flour, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Create a well in the center; add the yeast mixture, softened butter, and eggs. Stir until combined.
- Knead on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place dough in a greased bowl; cover with a damp cloth and let it rise in a warm spot for about an hour or until doubled in size.
- Gently fold in soaked raisins or currants into the dough.
- Divide dough into about 12 equal portions; shape into buns and place on a lined baking tray close together.
- Mix flour with water to create a paste for crosses; pipe over buns before baking at 375°F (190°C) for about 20 minutes until golden brown.
- For glaze: mix icing sugar with vanilla extract and enough milk to achieve desired consistency; drizzle over cooled buns.
