Ingredients

For the Dough
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk warm
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest
For the Topping
  • 1 egg egg wash beaten
  • 1/4 cup sliced almonds optional
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar for sprinkling

Method

Prepare the Dough
  1. In a small bowl, activate the yeast by mixing it with warm milk and a teaspoon of sugar. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, lemon zest, and orange zest. Create a well in the center.
  3. Add the activated yeast mixture, melted butter, and eggs into the well. Mix until a dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
First Rise
  1. Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover with a damp cloth. Let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Shape the Bread
  1. After the dough has risen, punch it down and turn it out onto a floured surface.
  2. Divide the dough into three equal pieces and roll each into a long rope.
  3. Braid the three ropes together to form a loaf shape.
Second Rise
  1. Place the braided loaf on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cover it with a cloth and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
Bake the Bread
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush the loaf with the beaten egg and sprinkle with almonds and sugar.
  2. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
Cool and Serve
  1. Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack before slicing.
  2. Serve warm or at room temperature with butter or jam.
